Frequently Asked Questions
What Is A Tithe?
The tithe means “tenth.” In the Old Testament, the tithe referred to God’s people giving 10 percent of their gross income, which was also called “firstfruits,” to God to fund the Levite priests’ ministry (Numbers 18:21-29; 27-30). In addition to the tithe, there were offerings required of God’s people. The mandatory Old Testament tithe resulted in over 25 percent of a family’s gross income going to God and ministry.
In the New Testament, 2 Corinthians 8-9 is the most thorough teaching on giving. It beautifully teaches that financial giving to the local church among God’s people focuses on grace, generosity, and the heart. The greater our love for Jesus, the greater our passion will be to become generous givers so more people can experience His life-changing love, like we have. Grace inspires us to exceed Old Testament giving! When we give generously to the local church, we aren’t deciding how much of our wealth to give. We are deciding how much of God’s wealth we are keeping for our own uses.
